Global Outbreak Update: Poliovirus type 2 detected in Mozambique
Two cases were reported on January 17th, 2019. National routine oral polio vaccine type 3 immunization campaign took place in 2017.
- Status: January 25th, 2019
- Timeframe: Two cases were reported on January 17th, 2019. National routine oral polio vaccine type 3 immunization campaign took place in 2017.
- Regions: Two reported cases in Molumbo district, Zambezia province.
- Virus Information: Both cases were determined to be genetically-linked circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) isolates. One patient had no history of vaccination, the second case was in contact with the first case.
- Response: Current WHO and Ministry of Health field investigation to determine the extent and source of the virus. Clinical, epidemiological and immunological type investigations taking place.
- Recommendation: Neighboring countries should consolidate AFP surveillance. Travelers to the region must ensure confirmation of a complete age-appropriate polio vaccination series.
