Addison disease

Addison disease is a chronic endocrine disorder caused by autoimmune destruction of the adrenal cortex. The consequence is a mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid deficiency. The term Addison disease is most commonly used for any form of chronic primary adrenal insufficiency, but strictly speaking, it is an autoimmune adrenalitis.

The age of manifestation extends over all age groups, but there is an accumulation at the age of 40 years. Failure to comply with the treatment or a sudden onset of illness can result in acute adrenal insufficiency (or adrenal crisis), a life-threatening medical emergency.

The Addison disease is not curable, but it is possible to reduce the life expectancy by appropriate treatment and prevention. However, ignoring them makes them life-threatening.
