Bladder exstrophy

Bladder exstrophy is a congenital malformation affecting the lower abdominal wall, urinary bladder, anterior pelvic ring and the external genitalia.

The reason is a malformation of the lower abdominal wall, which leads to a breakthrough. Consequently, the bladder is exposed to the outside and both ureteral openings are visible. The urethral and bladder mucosa goes continuously into the surrounding skin. This leads to urinary incontinence.

Boys are twice as likely to be affected by bladder exstrophy as girls.
