Idiopathic achalasia

Idiopathic achalasia is a neurodegenerative disorder that is caused by nerve cells of the myenteric plexus. Due to the destruction of these cells, which have a dilatory effect on the esophagus muscles, the muscle tone of the esophagus is increased.

There is a disruption of peristalsis and occlusion of the lower esophageal sphincter. The porridge –like digested food can only make it through hard. This leads to dysphagia, reguration, chest pain and in the long term to weight loss.

The exact cause of the disease is not yet known, but it is believed that it is based on an autoimmune process. Mostly it manifests itself between the 25th and the 60th year of life.
