Mental illnesses and humanity's psychological, emotional, and behavioural health problems had been on the rise over the last decades. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the number, geographic spread, and diversity of cases has made this trade to garner further attention by medical professionals engaged in frontline, research, or policy work. In such a context, it has become more evident to many medical professionals to refer to a "Global Mental Health Crisis".

Decades-old trend, pandemic-triggered rise

Already in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization's Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus raised his concerns over the psychological impact of the pandemic on the rise of depression and anxiety cases, and the domino effect of mental health issues caused by social isolation, fear of contagion and loss of loved ones around the world.

At the same time, the prevention or treatment of mental or psychiatric illnesses is often protracted or may not provide the desired improvement in health and wellbeing of patients. Conventional psychopharmacological therapies are not uncommonly characterised by a low effectiveness and a high side-effect burden.

It is in this content that a growing number of experts in the medical research and treatment community have been over decades and specially in recent years, paying attention to psychedelics in order to understand their full potential as a further field of treatment for mental health. The INSIGHT Conference is one of the key European events where experts gather to present, challenge and exchange the state-of-the-art experiences and findings in practical and science-based psychedelic therapies and their cultural implementation.

Focus areas for the 2021 conference

For the 2021 edition, INSIGHT will have four tracks that will cover 1.Treatment, 2. Basic Research, 3. Philosophy/Anthropology, and 4. Implementation; with the aim of providing diverse platforms amongst researchers and practitioners to analyse academic findings, clinical applications and the emerging psychedelic industry.

This edition will take place September 9-12 as a hybrid event with gatherings in Berlin and online, and according to local, federal and European COVID-19 biosafety regulations. INSIGHT 2021 is organized by the MIND Foundation, a Berlin-based European non-profit science and education organization that promotes psychedelic research and therapy and their role on the neurobiological and psychological potential of psychedelics to improve mental health and well-being in a clinical setting.

As in previous occasions, INSIGHT 2021 welcomes the general public, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, nurse practitioners, psychologists, physicians from all specialties, and mental health professionals to Berlin and the event's digital streaming options.
